Bhupinder Singh (musician)- Male PlayBack Singer of India

Bhupinder Singh (born Jan 27, 1955) is an Indian musician, chiefly a Ghazal singer and Bollywood playback singer.

Early life

Born in Patiala, Punjab to Prof Nattha Singh (a Sikh), a trained vocalist and his early music teacher. He was one of the 7 brothers & sisters. His Father was very strict regarding music, at one stage Bhupinder Singh used to hate music and its instruments.

Music career

Early in his career, Bhupinder performed on All India Radio, Delhi. He was also attached to the Delhi Doordarshan Center, Delhi. He learnt guitar and violin. In 1964, music director Madan Mohan heard him over AIR, and called him to Bombay. He gave him a chance to sing the song Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga with Mohammad Rafi in Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat.  Although the song was hit, Bhupinder didn't get much recognition. He sang a few more songs in some low-budget films.

Bhupinder also sang for a few Nepalese films like Prempinda, Anyaya.

Later, Bhupinder joined Rahul Dev Burman's orchestra and played guitar for many of his popular scores including Dum Maro Dum. He became a good friend of R D Burman, who gave him a chance to sing in Gulzar's Parichay (1972). Bhupinder sang two songs in the movie, Beeti Na Beetai Raina and Mitwa Bole Meethe Bai, which gave him recognition as a singer. Bhupinder sang some more popular songs in Gulzar's movies. Some of these songs included "Dil Dhoondta Hai" from Mausam, "Naam Gum Jayega" and "Ek Akela Is Shaher Mein".

Gradually, Bhupinder started releasing private albums. His first LP had three self-composed songs and was released in 1968. In 1978, he released his second LP of ghazals, in which he introduced the Spanish guitar, bass and drums to the ghazal style. In 1980, he released his third LP titled Woh Jo Shair Tha, for which the lyrics were written by Gulzar.

Personal life

In the mid-1980s, Bhupinder married a Bangladeshi hindu singer Mitali and moved away from playback singing. Together, they perform at ghazal and live performances.

Personal life and background

Vani Jayaram was born in Vellore in Tamil Nadu, in a family of musicians. Her mother is the disciple of Ranga Ramunaja Iyengar, a great veena exponent. Kadaloor Sreenivasa Iyengar, who taught Vani’s sister music, was fascinated by her observation and grasping power. He taught her a few Dikshitar kritis when she was hardly five.The fifth daughter in a family of six daughters and three sons, Vani always secretly yearned for a career in film playback singing. Considered to be a child prodigy, Vani Jayaram claims to have recognized the different ragas of Indian classical music before the age of five. Her voice was first heard on All India Radio, Madras, at the age of eight.

Vani Jayaram studied Carnatic music under the tutelage of Kadalur Srinivasa Iyengar, T. R. Balasubramanian and R. S. Mani. Her Hindustani classical music guru was Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan.

After her marriage to Jayaram she settled in Mumbai, where she realized her dream.

Career

In 1971, she realized her childhood ambition of becoming a film playback singer when Hindi film music director Vasant Desai chose her voice for the Hindi feature film Guddi. She recorded three songs for Guddi, Bol Re Papi Hara a song based on the Hindustani raga Miyan Malhar, instantly made her an household name of India. For that song she was awarded the Tansen Samman (for best classical-based song in a Hindi film), the Lions International Best Promising Singer award, the All India Cinegoers Association award, and the All India Film-goers Association award for the Best Playback Singer in 1971. She went on to sing a few songs each for music directors of Hindi cinema, including Chitragupt, Naushad (a classical song in Pakeezah and a duet with Asha Bhosle in Aaina), Madan Mohan (a duet with Kishore Kumar in the film Ek Mutthi Aasmaan), O.P. Nayyar (several songs from the film Khoon Ka Badla Khoon including duets with Mohammed Rafi and also with Uttara Kelkar and Pushpa Pagdhare), R. D. Burman (a duet with Mukesh in the film Chhalia), Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal, and Jaidev (a duet with Manna Dey in Parinay and a solo in Solwa Saawan). Her songs in the film Meera (1979), composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar (not to be confused with Meera (1945), starring M. S. Subbulakshmi), won her the Filmfare Award. Vani recorded her first Tamil song for the Tamil film Thaiyum Seiyum, for S. M. Subbaiah Naidu, in the year 1973.

Around 1974, she shifted her base to Chennai and soon became a sought-after singer in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema. Besides Hindi and Tamil, Vani Jayaram has recordings in other languages of India. These include some songs in Gujarati, Marathi, Marwari, Haryanvi, Bengali and Tulu, and a huge repertoire in Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Oriya. For her work in some of these languages, she has been awarded many prestigious awards, among them are: Best Female Playback Singer for states of Gujarat (1975), Tamil Nadu (1980) and Orissa (1984).

One of her most famous Marathi songs, "Runanubandhachya", is a duet with the classical Hindustani singer Kumar Gandharva. This song was composed by Vani's mentor Vasant Desai for a Marathi drama called Dev Deenaghari Dhaavlaa. The song's lyrics were written by Bal Kolhatkar.

Awards

Vani Jayaram was chosen for the Indian President's National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer of 1975, for her work in M. S. Viswanathan's Apoorva Raagangal. Shankarabharanam (Telugu), the film scored by K. V. Mahadevan, gave Vani Jayaram her second National Award as Best Playback Singer of 1980. Once again, she was awarded her third National Award for Best Playback Singer of 1991 for K. V. Mahadevan's Swathi Kiranam.

Her songs in the Pandit Ravi Shankar scored film Meera brought her the Film World (1979) Cine Herald (1979) and Filmfare Award (1980) for Best Playback Singer for "Mere To Giridhar Gopal".

She was awarded Tanzen Award in 1972, which she won for "Bole Re Pappihara" (from the film Guddi), one of the most popular songs in her career.

She is also the youngest artist to be awarded the Sangeet Peet Samman.

Srilekha Parthasarathy Female Playback Singer of India

Srilekha Parthasarathy is a Tamil singer who is commonly referred to by her first name Srilekha. She has a versatile voice, and has experienced an impressive success in other genres of music as well, including ghazals.

Srilekha began her professional career in 2000, when she sang the scintilating Jingle for the “Idhayam Oil” advertisement, which was piturised on “Jothika”. She describes the jingle as her ticket into the Tamil music industry.

Early Life and Background

Shweta Pandit is an Indian Playback Singer, Song Writer and Live Performer in Bollywood.

At the age of 5, Shweta Pandit worked with Legendary Indian Composer, Ilayaraja for the award-winning film Anjali, which was re-recorded in Hindi from Tamil. She dubbed for the lead role in the film in Hindi.

Born and raised in Mumbai, India, where she studied at Utpal Shanghvi School and briefly at Mithibai College. She is the fourth generation of vocalists in her family of great music maestros. Her Grand Uncle is Padma Vibhushan - Sangeet Martand and legendary Hindustani Classical Vocalist, Pandit Jasraj (Born 1930) and she learnt music since the age of 8 from his elder brother, Sangeet Acharya - Pandit Pratap Narayan (1918-2002). Her Father, Vishwaraj Pandit is a Classical Tabla Player and used to be a Music Director in the late 70's and early 80's with his younger brother Jatin. Together they formed the name 'Mandheer - Jatin' and later became Associate Music Director, when 'Jatin - Lalit' decided to compose as a team in the early 90's. Shweta's aunt Sulakshana Pandit, was a household name in the 70's as one the biggest Singing Sensations who also acted in movies like Uljhan, Sankoch, Manoranja, Hera Pheri, Apnapan and is now retired. Shubha Mudgal (born 1959) is a well-known Indian singer of Hindustani classical music, Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, and popular Indian Pop music.

She has been awarded the 1996 National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Music Direction for 'Amrit Beej', the 1998 Gold Plaque Award for Special Achievement in Music, at the 34th Chicago International Film Festival, for her music in the film Dance of the Wind (1997), and the Padma Shri in 2000. She is also close to progressive movements like ANHAD and SAHMAT.

Early life

Born in an academic family to Skand and Jaya Gupta in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Both her parents were professors of English literature at Allahabad University, with deep interest in classical Hindustani music and Kathak . Her paternal grandfather, Prof. P. C. Gupta was also a professor at Allahabad University.

She attended St. Mary's Convent Inter College. As a young girl she started learning Kathak in Allahabad following the foot steps of her sister. She replied once to a dance examiner's routine query of "Aap kis gharaane ka naachti hain (what gharana (house/style) do you dance from?)" with the retort "Hum apne gharaane ka naachti hain (I dance from my own gharana)" . She later switched to Hindustani classical music as her vocation of choice while maintaining the same individualistic attitude. Her first traditional teacher (guru) was Pandit Ramashreya Jha in Allahabad.

Mudgal moved to New Delhi and enrolled at the Delhi University. She continued her musical education under Pandit Vinaya Chandra Mudgalya at the urging of her first guru. After graduating from the university, her training continued under Pandit Vasant Thakar in Delhi, and more informally with other established singer as Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, Naina Devi and Pt. Kumar Gandharva.

Performing career

Shubha Mudgal started performing as a classical singer in the 80s and gained a certain reputation as a talented singer. In the 90's, she started experimenting with other forms of music, including pop and fusion varieties. She says, "I believe in music. Khayal and thumari are my favourites, but that doesn’t mean I should not experiment with other forms, Why should I curtail my musical urges?" asks the singer and adds, "I want to allow the artist in me to come through. If you are a musician, how can you say, 'this one is from devotional poetry, so I'm not going to sing it.' In addition to her recordings and concerts, she also briefly ran a website called raagsangeet.com aimed at lovers of traditional Indian music.

International Performances

On october 24, 2008, The kickstart of Deepawali festival by the melodious Shubha Mudgal. She sang great songs from her latest album "Pyar Ke Geet". Packed auditorium of Sunnyvale Hindu Temple and Community Center, community, visitors, devotees enjoyed the performance. Everyone danced to touching songs. Event started with Huna Huna, a song from the depth of heart.

Personal life

After graduating from the University, she married Pt. Mudgalaya's son, Mukul Mudgal who was a promising lawyer then. Shubha Mudgal got divorced from her first husband, and got married to Aneesh Pradhan. Her only son from her previous marriage, Dhawal, is a member of a Delhi-based band.[9]

Ghoshal's career began when she won the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest as an adult. Her Bollywood playback singing career began with Devdas, for which she received both the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer and the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent. Early years

Ghoshal was born to a Bengali Hindu family in Kolkata, West Bengal. Her ancestors came from the Bikrampur region of Dhaka district, Bangladesh. She grew up in Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota, Rajasthan. She belongs to a highly academic family. Her father "B Ghoshal" works in Bhabha Atomic Research Center as a nuclear power plant engineer for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India; her mother is a post-graduate literature student.

From the age of four Ghoshal accompanied her mother on the harmonium. She trained in Hindustani classical music in Kota with Maheshchandra Sharma.

As a child, she won the children's special episode of the Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) contest on Zee TV. Kalyanji, who also judged the competition, convinced her parents to move to Mumbai.[2] She trained with Kalyanji for 18 months and continued her classical music training with Mukta Bhide in Mumbai.

She studied at Atomic Energy Central Schools (AECS) at Rawatbhata and Anushaktinagar (Mumbai). After graduation she enrolled at SIES College.

Career

Ghoshal caught the attention of film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali when she participated in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa for a second time, this time as an adult. In 2000, he offered her the opportunity to be the voice of Paro, the lead female character of his film Devdas, who was portrayed by Aishwarya Rai. Shreya sang five songs under the musical direction of Ismail Darbar in the film. Her performance won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, as well as Filmfare's RD Burman Award for New Music Talent, given to upcoming talents in music. She also won a National Film Award for the song "Bairi Piya".

Since Devdas, she has received awards singing under prominent musicians including A. R. Rahman, M. M. Keeravani, Shantanu Moitra and Pritam. She has won many awards both in the north and south film industries. Moviegoers from across the world heard Ghoshal’s singing voice pictured on Aishwarya Rai, and in coming years she quickly became one of the top female playback singers in Bollywood, alongside Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam, and Kavita Krishnamurthy.

She enjoys symphony and instrumental western music; her favourite groups are Dream Theater, Backstreet Boys and Boyzone. But Indian music is her passion. She won three more Filmfare Awards. She is the only singer to get four national awards at the age of 26 in the Hindi film industry.

Sharda Sinha (born October 9, 1952) is a famous folk-singer from Bihar. She is music teacher. she has vowed respect and given a new dimension to Maithili and Bhojpuri songs. Sadhana Sargam is of Maharashtrian origin. She was trained in Indian classical music by her mother, Mrs. Neelatai Ghanekar at an early age, and then by Pandit Jasraj. In an interview in May 2007 while touring in the USA, the most celebrated composer of the Indian music industry, Mr. A. R. Rahman, complimented Sadhana Sargam, calling her the only Indian singer who could surpass his imaginations and expectations in her renditions of songs.

"It is one of my few scores that was not well released," Rahman says. "The songs were well used in the film but they did not reach the listeners in significant numbers." The numbers were sung by Sukhvinder Singh (who also wrote couple of lyrics) and Sadhana Sargam among others.

"She is one of the few singers who has surprised me at every turn," Rahman says. "Many singers do a very good job of doing exactly what I tell them to do but she somehow goes beyond instructions. She takes a song to another level effortlessly, and she is so good at it that I am surprised every time I work with her."
